Summer came in hot this year with days consistently in the 80s and 90s with minimal rain so far. Here in Wisconsin, we're typically used to more of a spring time to break us in to the sunny days, outdoor adventures, in addition to a gradual acclimation to outside workouts. So while it's important to stay consistent with your strength workouts to maintain a healthy and strong body, it's also important to be sure that you're taking some steps to avoid heat injury and exhaustion. In this blog post, we'll explore some easy ways for you to stay consistent with your strength workouts throughout the summer. Let's dive in!

  1. Set Realistic Goals: To stay consistent, it's essential to set realistic goals for your summer workouts. Start by understanding your current fitness level and the exercises that suit your abilities. Set specific and achievable goals that you can work towards throughout the summer. For example, you might aim to do strength workouts three times a week or increase the number of push-ups you can do over time.

  2. Make a Schedule: Creating a workout schedule is a great way to stay organized and committed. Plan your strength workouts ahead of time and consider working out earlier or later than you would typically to avoid the warmest part of the day. Decide on the best time of day for your workouts and block that time off on your calendar. This way, you'll have a clear reminder and be less likely to skip your exercise routine.

  3. HYDRATE: Obviously you'll be sweating more with the warmer temps. Track how much fluid you lose with each workout and be sure to drink that volume afterwards. Additionally, don't slack on the electrolytes; just water won't cut it. We like nuun and LMNT to be sure we don't bonk.

  4. Embrace the Outdoors: One of the best parts of summer is spending time outside. Take advantage of the sunny weather and move your workouts outdoors. Find a local park, beach, or open space where you can exercise. Fresh air and natural surroundings can boost your mood, making your workouts more enjoyable. Just remember to stay hydrated and protect your skin from the sun with sunscreen!

  5. Keep a Journal: Maintaining a workout journal can help you track your progress and stay motivated, in addition to helping identify sticking points that might be holding you back. Write down the exercises you do, the number of repetitions or sets, and any improvements you notice, as well as how you slept, what you ate and generally how you felt that day. If you're noticing a series of off days, you might be able to better identify the source of the problem. And, when you see how far you've come, it will inspire you to keep going and maintain consistency with your strength workouts!
